Join us, Hank and winemaker Brad Sherman for a tasting of Michael Florentino Cellars!
Winemaking is half science and half intuition. Brad Sherman, the wine maker has the science background and is inquisitive by nature. It is this combination that has allowed Brad to create award winning wines.
The jump from amateur to professional status came when Brad’s local wine shop asked if he would create a Sangiovese for them under their own label. So before he made his first wines, he already had a sale.
Brad started the winery as many do, working with another winery and going the virtual route to sell with a distributors license. This developed until a spot in the “Wine Warehouse District” in Woodinville opened up, and he joined three other wine makers in renting a place.
The final story was when Michael Florentino Cellars moved into its new location in February of 2012. This spot has its own cooled barrel room, a spacious tasting room and a separate winery space for fermenting, blending and bottling the wines.
Michael Florentino Cellars currently produces just over a 1000 cases of wine and limits its growth to around 2000 cases. This will allow the winery to focus on the wines and continue to experiment with the wonderful grapes Washington State!
Ambassador was founded on the simple belief that no other experience is quite as enchanting as drinking wine. We know that something magical happens when you drink wine with friends; good wine becomes great wine and good friends become better friends. This was the case with our founding partners. An eclectic group of individuals with diverse professional backgrounds, their lives and friendships have been forever altered by the shared experience of creating and drinking what we believe to be a fantastic wine. Formed in 2004, and named after the mystical vineyard that has been so good to us, Ambassador’s vision is to become the top estate producing winery on Washington state's Red Mountain. To succeed in this vision, we live and work by three guiding principles: 1) Take the process, not ourselves, seriously 2) Life is too short to drink anything other than spectacular wine 3) Only put our name on a bottle of truly spectacular wine. In other words, make great wine and have as much fun as possible while we do it.
Producing only estate wines allows us the unique ability to control the wine making process from vine to bottle. Our vineyard is young but under the expert care of our vineyard manager Dick Boushey, it has produced some of the top tier grapes on Red Mountain and Washington State. Combine this with the handcrafted expertise of our winemaker, Sarah Goedhart and the end product is magic in a bottle!
Join us and winemaker Brain Grasso for a tasting of Seattle's own Structure Cellars!
"A mainstay in the SoDo district of Seattle, Structure Cellars was founded by Brian and Brandee Grasso — great people that make great wine. Brian got his start in the restaurant industry where he caught the wine bug and later served as cellar rat at Baer and also interning under the iconic guidance of Chris Sparkman of Sparkman Cellars before starting his own winery. Brian is humble, knowledgable and a downright awesome guy to talk wine with.
A few weeks back I had the chance to visit his new space in the SoDo district. The new wines by Structure beautifully showcased a hot vintage in Washington. 2015 had the earliest harvest in history, so achieving acidity was paramount especially in red wines. The Structure releases had marvelous poise and fruit weight. Look to the 2015 Structure Cellars ‘Foundation’ Cabernet Franc (WWB, 91) which has a wonderful herbaceous edge and shows a lovely texture and feminine quality. Even better was the 2015 Structure Cellars ‘Foundation’ Syrah (WWB, 92) as the wine showed really good range and downright delicious black fruit flavors with good acidity. Join us for a tasting of COR Cellars! We will be pouring Alba Cor White, Cab Franc Rosae, Tempranillo and Malbec!
Wine Our Way
Site Selection Is Key
Our initial effort went into site selection and the process of matching varietals to sites around the state to produce distinctive wines which accurately reflect our region. As we grew we incorporated more and more sites all around Washington state. At present we work with 8 growers and 10 vineyard sites.
Seasons, Harvest And Blend
Our harvest is spread out from the beginning of September until the end of October. As the grapes are brought in we ferment each lot separately and then run them into barrels or small tanks and keep each lot independent throughout the following winter.
The following spring, blending decisions are made, red wines are racked off the lees, and the whites and rosé are bottled to retain their fruit and youthfulness. For our younger released red wines (MOMENTUM and Tempranillo) we do final blending in the late spring and bottle in the fall. Our longer aged reds remain in barrel for an additional winter and are bottled the following spring.
Low Impact Is Our Priority
Throughout the winemaking process, we use gravity when possible and handle the wines minimally as we raise them into their maturity. Our goal is for our bottled wine to represent the youthful energy and enthusiasm that we feel for winemaking. We hope to present wines that are young but ready to drink.
Join us and the wonderful Hank La Luz this Wednesday for a tasting of Oregon's St. Josef's Winery!
We will be pouring St Josef's Sparkling Lilli, 2015 Pinot Gris, 2014 Estate Pinot Noir and 2012 Kitara Barrel Select Pinot Noir.
Planted in 1978, with our first ‘legal’ vintage in 1983, St. Josef’s is one of the original Oregon wine pioneers. Our goal is to make food-friendly wines that can enhance any meal without breaking the bank as well as a line of reserve oregon wine to enjoy on special occasions (like Tuesdays). We raise our own grapes from our five estate vineyards, maintained without the use of irrigation, harsh chemicals or pesticides. We’ve earned both Salmon Safe and Live certifications for our sustainability.
At Upsidedown we strive to produce wines with outstanding fruit that show true balance and sense of place. Letting the vineyard express itself, while guiding the juice through our wine making practices with minimal intervention. Utilizing indigenous yeasts that let the grapes speak for themselves and tell their story.
We believe in bringing people together, whether that be through sharing a bottle or sharing our profits. When you Drink Upsidedown, 20% of the proceeds are passed on to our partner organizations. This is just one small way that together we can make a difference.
